Mak Cun Mania - Level Up Experience

My second KL Level Up Game Jam was an extremely fruitful experience

To be honest I was highly excited and always looking forward to the KL Level Up Game Jam since the end of last year as the experience of working with people in the industry was truly an eye opener for me.

I was almost left out of the original participant list but I am glad that I made extra efforts to push myself into this year's Game Jam. This rang an alarm bell in mind reminding myself being a returning participant and a portfolio are still not good enough for me to get into the list comfortably.

Enough of the random rambling, there were a slight different compare to last year's as this year we are required to make a game based on the given franchise only instead of a theme. The two franchise that we are provided are Ejen Ali, a Malaysian animated series and Mak Cun, a Malay comedic TV series. It is clear to us that the intention for the Game Jam is to promote the franchise via the game made instead of focusing on the overall quality of it.

Having the chance to work with experienced Game Developers is always my biggest motivation and I am lucky enough to work with a talented team and learn tons from them this year. The team consist of Scott, a tech lead in his game company; Ardhan, a Indonesia game lecturer; Samantha, a highly rated Game Artist (also my senior). After meeting up and having a brief conversation during our breakfast, we all agree on going with a simple yet fun game play instead of shoehorning any content in just because of the franchise. We soon transit the discussion into a proper brainstorm session, it was one of the most efficient yet fun session that I had in my game development career. All the core concept and game scene are clearly plot out, everyone provide quality and precise feedback and we are all on the same page and in sync.

After talking to both the programmers and artist in the team, I was tasked mainly to come out with the art asset list, scenes design layout, audio asset list, backstory, dialogues, entity and attribute table and gathering all the audio file. I do found out that by putting the scenes design layout in a slide form really helps the scene programmer to have a taste of how all the navigation of scenes work and how the layout and size will be for the artist. While the entity and attribute table that I made proves to be organised and comprehensive enough to be rated by both of the programmers.

Going back to the game itself, we chose Mak Cun as the franchise to work on and we decide to pair it up something very direct and entertaining. Mainly because I believe that it's also the big idea behind an comedy TV series and also it fits our target market - the stay home moms, these individuals need something that are easy to digest, funny and stress relieving to let off some steam during their short break between their busy day which our gameplay suits perfectly. The core gameplay that required to hit enemy and high five friends is rather straightforward, player can then use the money earn during the gameplay to expand the E-Shop and overall sales.

I am extremely happy with both the work process and end result of the Game Jam however I am still having the problem of finish up my part too fast and having nothing much to offer besides designing work. I have the conclusion of the documents that I prepared are good enough to satisfied industry level but I need to have something more to offer outside of design. Once again, here's the link to all the documents and here's the link to download the game's APK.
