Mechaman - Nostalgic Sentai Show

Early Monster Design 

We decided to go for a vigorous colour palette as shown in most of the classic super sentai show and a simple vector art style to create a fun and easy going outlook. We kept the characters at a 3/4 side view as we believe it is the optimum angle to showcase the combat animation and damaged feedback which are crucial to provide the player with sufficient information and satisfaction.

Final Design of Mechaman

For the final design of the Mechaman, we are inspired by the popular colour scheme used in recent of mainstream hollywood movie posters to pick the colours blue and orange. For the structure of the mecha, we look into references such as 'Gundam', 'Pacific Rim' and most of the old super sentai show. We make certain part of the mecha bigger to create a size contrast to draw player attention towards those part as the fist and leg will be the part that receive most of the impact in a battle.

Small details such as flame and swing shadow are added in to exhilarated the impact of certain contact, we realise those elements play a vital role in making a battle sequence more exciting and realistic. We also added in few stretched frame before and after certain combat move to allow the mecha's action to feel heavy and on point as a giant robot should.

Final Design of Goatzilla

To align the monster with the playful tone of the game, we decide to design a parody monster based on a word play with one of the most famous Kaiju of all time - Godzilla. As the name suggest, the creature Goatzilla has an absurd backstory that pay homage to most of the outlandish monster origin in the Sentai genre. It is basically a goat that accidentally ate nuclear waste and being turn into a giant monster that spit radioactive waste. The green highlight the corrosive nature of the monster while the intimidating sharp spikes will grow out of it's back once it is enraged.

Classic 80's Super Sentai Themed Location

We want the background to be a big part of the game as it defined the aesthetics of the genre, hence we spend time watching and researching multiple old school sentai show in order to get the overall feeling right. The starting tutorial lab is a common location in this genre, we utilised the existing of human to emphasize the size and the power level difference. The ominous sky colour chosen for the city level are designed to make the characters and buildings stand out.

Final Layout Design

The overall scene layout are designed to make sure:

- Characters stand out from the background

- Illustrate the genre's nostalgic aesthetic 

- All important information are easily noticed and understood.
