Wake Up - Narrative Hacks

WU2.png

Similar to 'Hungry Gaming', this game is one of my assignment that I did for the same subject. I develop the game alone with Stencyl, but I did some of the art myself because the game is more personal hence it is hard for me to find any art asset that fits the narrative. I also utilised the exact same method of making weekly build to collect opinion from player but the focus are more on what are their emotional changes.

I try to make a simple and straightforward gameplay so that player can take some time off to feel and experience the game's narrative. As the title suggest, due to technical and time limitation I have to rely on only basic 2D art and sound effects to convey the intended emotion and storyline of the game. During this project, I am able to develop the following skills:

- Utilised level design to serve as a silent tutorial

- Deliver narrative with limited resources

- Making basic pixel art and digital imaging

- Making a rough playable prototype in Stencyl

- Construct centralised document for small size team

- Conduct player experience test session and evaluate the feedback

Since I want player to be able to fully focusing on the feeling of the game, I decided to challenge myself to have no textual tutorial in the game and to only teach the player how to play by pacing the game and careful level design. Other than that, I was over the moon when most of the playtester notice the heartbeat and background changes are connected to both the gameplay status and the story.
