Wake Up - My Game

Not a picture of mine, don't worry

Some time in my life, I saw this conspiracy theory that state that what if the life that we are currently living now are just imagination, a fantasy that our brain create while the real us are currently in a coma. This theory really sparks something in my mind and I would love to work on a platformer that run on that similar theme, the player experience that I wish to provide the player with are the thrill of exploring a mind, escape from there and wake up from the coma. The game are partially inspired by this game named "Coma" that just released in this 2017's E3, here's the video to the game's trailer and developer's interview.

In the game, player will be in an imaginary world name 'Limbic', they will have to fight against their emotions, deepest fear or sad past that have manifest into a form of monster. It's obvious every one have their own monster that they are fighting constantly, these monsters that I have in mind are vague, dark and shadowy silhouette figure, not all of them look terrifying as long as their appearance can represent a form of pain or depression.

The main objective of the game will be exploring the level, look for the key life memory moment in the player's life, these memories can help player gain more will to fight against these monsters, to wake up from the coma and to get back to their love one waiting for them on the bedside. These memories can be the first time we tasted ice cream in our life, the time when we touch and feel the warm of her palm, the moment when you make a promise to your sick dad on his bedside that you will take care of mom. These memories are not necessarily happy moment but those particular time of your life will make you realise that there are still a lot of excitement or important moment waiting for you in the future, so 'Wake Up'.

Before the start of the actual development I set some objective and how I am going to achieve them and to my surprise I actually make the game into what I had in mind although the lack of proper art. Here's the breakdown of what I set for myself:

What am I aiming to achieve?

  • My main objective is to create a platformer that can convey the message 'everyone have their own monster, there will always be up and down in life, hold on to people or memory that really matters and wake up'.

  • My secondary objective is to raise awareness on mental health condition and suicide issue.

How am I going to do it?

  • I will have to create monster, obstacle and key that can be highly relatable and relevant to the theme, I will have to do more research or interview in order to create them.

  • I have to give the player a sense of hope after they finish the game, the message of 'we are here for you, it will be fine'.

The concept of the world really drawn my attention

Some of the art that I found online which depict the 'monster' in our mind

Waking up from a coma and shaking off the demon in our mind required both external support and personal strength
